This vintage Marmoucha is a true masterpiece! The intricate diamond pattern in dark warm gray is accented with colorful motifs in red, maroon, and dark orange. Each horizontal row of diamonds has a different symbol running across the rug, broken only by the one near the middle right, which is marked with the date 1980 (seen in the photos from the top and back side).
Marmoucha is the name of a small tribe that neighbors the more widely known Beni Ourain tribe. They are famous for their large-sized rugs that are densely woven, often high pile, and always with incredible attention to detail. Inhabiting the Middle Atlas Mountains, this Berber tribe uses rugs not only to warm the floors but as beds and heavy blankets to keep warm during the freezing winter.
Vintage Berber rugs were not made for production, but as functional pieces to be used for many years and passed down through generations. The colors and patterns are a combination of traditional Berber symbolism and the personal expressions of the woman who made it. No two are the same!
Note: Each of these pieces has a story that started long before it’s arrival to June + Blue and may show signs of wear and fading. These imperfections are signs of authenticity and character, not flaws. Anything of note is included in the listing. All rugs are cleaned, and any repairs needed are done in Morocco before exporting.
All rug sales are final. Please do not hesitate to ask for more details on a specific rug.
