203 cm x 317 cm (6’8" x 10’5")
Age: 45-50 years
This vintage Marmoucha has a cream wool background with a gray and pale red pattern throughout. It is a rare find, due to both the pattern and colors used. The pale red color has faded to appear dark pink in some parts of the rug. Please inquire below if you would like to see more details.
Marmoucha is the name of a small tribe that neighbors the more widely known Beni Ourain tribe. They are famous for their large-sized rugs that are densely woven, often high pile, and always with incredible attention to detail. Inhabiting the Middle Atlas Mountains, this Berber tribe uses rugs not only to warm the floors but as beds and heavy blankets to keep warm during the freezing winter.
Vintage Berber rugs were not made for production, but as functional pieces to be used for many years and passed down through generations. The colors and patterns are a combination of traditional Berber symbolism and the personal expressions of the woman who made it. These pieces can show signs of wear which adds to their character and beauty while telling a story about where they were before June + Blue. All rugs are cleaned, and any repairs needed are done in Morocco before shipment.
