Vintage Beni Ourain from the 1960’s. While the tribal motif is recognisably Beni Ourain, it is a little out of the ordinary with a less predictable pattern. The background is done in creamy undyed wool. The tribal motif is done primarily in dark brown and gray, with accents of very faded purple tones. The motif is significantly more faded on the bottom third of the rug which really adds interest not only visually, but in reflecting on the history of this piece. At 50 years old, the wool is silky, shiny, and thick. Everything you want from a vintage Beni Ourain!
The Beni Ourain tribal group is made up of 17 smaller tribes that inhabit the Middle Atlas Mountains. Their carpets were made to use as floor coverings and heavy blankets to protect them from harsh mountain winters. Traditionally, Beni Ourain women used live wool for these carpets
Berber rugs were not made for production, but as functional pieces to be used for many years and passed down through generations. All eautiful colors and patterns used have a true meaning behind them that are personal expressions of the woman who made it. These pieces can show signs of wear which adds beauty and character while telling a story about where they were before June + Blue. All rugs are cleaned, and any repairs needed are done in Morocco before shipment.
