This vintage Beni Ourain from the late 1980's is a little piece of art! The tribal designs are vertically symmetrical for the most part, yet little touches were added throughout to make it a whimsical little piece. The symbols in the top third are highlighted with pale pink, the middle third has pale purple undertones that are now extremely faded, and the bottom of the rug features bright colored recycled cotton accents. The cotton in the triangle accents is primarily dark orange, navy blue and teal. This is a really unique addition for a Beni Ourain and really makes this piece special. I've never come across anything like it!
The Beni Ourain tribal group is made up of 17 smaller tribes that inhabit the Middle Atlas Mountains. Their carpets were made to use as floor coverings and heavy blankets to protect them from harsh mountain winters.
Vintage Berber rugs were not made for production, but as functional pieces to be used for many years and passed down through generations. The patterns used have a true meaning behind them that are personal expressions of the woman who made it. These pieces can show signs of wear which I believe adds to their beauty and value, while telling a story about where they were before June + Blue. All rugs are cleaned, and any repairs needed are done in Morocco before shipment.
