Handira | Striped
Handira blankets are traditionally gifted to a Berber bride, handmade for her by the other women in her family. As part of the big day celebrations, the bride wears the handira around her shoulders like a cape.
While handiras are considered blankets, they can also serve as a lightweight rug or wall hanging. Use this as a rug in a nursery, lay it at the end of a bed or drape it over your sofa, you really can't go wrong!
This piece was handmade for June + Blue at a cooperative in the Atlas Mountains. A woman named Khadija used an upright loom to weave the blanket and then meticulously sewed each sequin individually. Each blanket takes several weeks to complete. Khadija supports her family with her craft, and June + Blue is proud to bring her work to the rest of the world. Honest and fair purchasing is our highest priority when working with artisans. More information about this on our About Me and About our textiles pages.
